The Reverend Canon Lee Crawford: ¨It is a privilege and honour to be chaplain at the 5th Synod of the Anglican Church in the Region of Central America¨ (live blogging from El Salvador)

The Rev. Canon Lee Crawford, Chaplain, 5th Synod of the Anglcian Church of  the Region of Central America

¨I, too, have been touched by grace in the midst of all that is going on.¨
LIVE UPDATE FROM THE 5th SYNOD of the Anglican Church in the Region of Central America. The Synod is being held this week in the IARCA diocese of El Salvador reported by the Reverend Canon Lee Crawford, Chaplain:
I presented a retreat Monday on the Five Marks of Mission, speaking in general terms about how we, as a Communion, engage in God's mission, how we are called to preach reconciliation (without which, there is no peace), how the Baptismal Covenant is a fundamental basis for the Five Marks of Mission. All mission takes place in a particular context (and, yes, I mentioned gender, expression of one's sexuality). The church IS mission. Our liturgy is central to mission. We celebrate the God-in-action, because all mission comes from God. One citation from the charla:
And the last part was talking about the images we use to engage in mission, all biblically-based: friends, sisters and brothers, compañeros/as.

EXTRA INSPIRATIONAL MOMENTS:

I see being chaplain also as a pastoral role, so as to point out to the synod in a meditation during Evening Prayer that there were moments of grace in the midst of the day, that they be open to recognising the presence of the Holy Spirit. A woman responded to the presentation on the LGBTI ministry that the IAES offers with words that were so grace-filled that I thanked her and we both wept. The presenter and I wept for how much of himself he had given, how he had put himself out there, how he had opened a door for a conversation on a provincial level and how the province might move forward in this area (I think there has been progress). I have been in charge of all the liturgy and, instead of simply using the LOC, have translated prayers from Daily Prayer for all Seasons, approved by GC 2012. This morning, for MP, the theme will be la Sabidura, obviously important for the work that lies ahead. So that is a piece of what I have been up to. It has been a privilege and honour to be chaplain; I, too, have been touched by grace in the midst of all that is going on.

ANGLICAN HISTORY in the NEW WORLD: Robert Hunt (c.1568-1608) Chaplain of the first English colony at Jamestown, Virginia

Robert Hunt shrine, Jamestown, Virginia

ROBERT HUNT - The Episcopal Church Calendar

PRIEST & FIRST CHAPLAIN AT JAMESTOWN, 1608

Robert Hunt (c. 1568 - 1608), a vicar in the Church of England, was chaplain of the expedition that founded, in 1607, the first successful English colony in the New World, at Jamestown, Virginia.

He served two parishes in England, leaving each under a cloud, and then was "recruited" by Richard Bancroft (the Archbishop of Canterbury) as chaplain for the newest expedition to the New World by the London Virginia Company.
On April 26, 1607, after an unusually long voyage of 144 days, the 3 ships and 105 men and boys made landfall at the southern edge of the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. They named the location Cape Henry, in honour of the young Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, eldest son of their king. There, Hunt led what was likely the first protestant sermon in America since Sir Francis Drake's landfall at California in 1579, planting a cross at the site.
Within a few weeks, the settlers chose a permanent inland site for their colony on the James River, naming it Jamestown in honor of King James I. The location was selected as being a strategic defensive position against possible attacks by ships of competing European factions. However, this came at a terrible price, as Jamestown Island combined swampy and mosquito-infested land, offering poor hunting and little room for farming with brackish tidal river water and no fresh water springs. While conflicts with the other Europeans never became a problem, getting along with the Native Americans, and even more importantly, with each other almost immediately became major issues for the ill-prepared colonists. Despite the incredibly onerous circumstances of the Jamestown mission's beginnings, Rev. Hunt seemed to rise to the occasion, often mediating disputes between the camp's various factions, smoothing "ruffled feathers" and making peace. He was described by Edward Wingfield (first president of the Jamestown Governing Council) as “a man not in any way to be touched with the rebellious humours of a popish spirit, nor blemished with the least suspicion of a factious schismatic, whereof I had a special care”.
Today, a shrine sits on the site at the National Park Service's Historic Jamestowne attraction on Jamestown Island. The shrine replicates the outdoor chapel conditions under which he spiritually led the men and boys, most of whom were to die, as did Chaplain Hunt, during the first year.¨

PRAYER (traditional language)
Almighty God, we bless thy Name for the life and witness of Robert Hunt, first chaplain to the Jamestown colony, whose community knew him as an honest, religious and courageous divine who, in his short life, endured great hardships without complaint. Help us, like him, to work for reconciliation and healing wherever we may be placed; through Jesus Christ thy Son, who with thee and the Holy Spirit livest and reignest, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
